How to get more visitors to my website? This is a question that every website owner asks them self. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most crucial elements to increase the amount of visitors to your website. The more visitors your website gets, the more likely you are to receive more potential clients. How does SEO work for my website?

How do I get my website to rank on the first page of Google, and other search engines? Google, Yahoo and Bing are the world’s most known search engines. The most effective way to scout for a particular subject on a website is to enter it into a search engine. It is proven that most people only browse through the 1st page of the search results. If the 1st page does not contain the correct information, a user is likely to try different search key words and phrases. Those sites get the most hits and probably the most business as well.

How SEO works

There are certain key elements on a website that is important for web crawlers to determine how well your website is put together and how relevant your content is to a specific keyword or phrase searched by a user on Google for example. For your website to list on the first page of Google, the keyword or phrase that a user entered needs to be placed at specific and strategic locations on the web page that is relevant to the user's search. If the page only contains the keyword "SEO services" once or twice in the page, but the other content focuses on a different topic, then the page does not contain enough information relevant to the user's search. Now since people can refer to a specific subject in more than one term, it is important to contain keywords in your content that has the same meaning, much like synonyms. A common misperception of how people search on the internet is by Brand Name, Company name and sometimes even the URL of a website. Most people that search on Google, search for WHAT they want, not for WHO they want. Their decision on WHO they want is mostly based on WHAT they find.

Ofcourse there are cases where a user can search for a specific entity like "Woolworths" or "Audi". This is mostly the case with international known Organizations. If your brand or Company is not known on such a large scale, you have to cater for users that will search for WHAT you sell. When they directly search for your company name, you will most probably be on the first page of Google, but if they don't know your company name, they will not search for it.

How long before my site will be on the first page of Google?

There is really no set timeframe on how it could take for your website to climb up the ladder of website listings. It can take anything between 3 Weeks or 3 Months, but it is definitely worth it. Just like your website listing can increase it's page ranking above your competitors', so can their websites, with the right SEO provided, reach a ranking above your top page. This is the reason why SEO is an ongoing process. It's simply not a matter of achieving a first page ranking, it's a matter of keeping it a first page ranking.

Search Engines like Google continues to develop and improve their algorithms to prevent spammy and irrelevant websites to list on the first page, in order to provide website listings with relevance to search keywords or phrases. SEO techniques that used to work are either improved or penalized for. To provide an example, a while ago it was perfectly fine to create a group of links as keywords on your website, make the text white and hide it on a white background. Google soon saw that as unethical, and changed their algorithms to penalize websites that used that method. This also has a great amount of influence on your website rankings. Competitors below or above your page ranking may lose or gain their position, depending on how the website is being optimized.
